Welcome to the War
Earth will never be the same again. Life as we know it has gone.
A War like no other grips the world like a vice, a war that will determine the survival of humanity. The Chthons have taken our cities and our towns, civilians live in encampments scattered around the world, praying they will not be found while the governments hide in their bunkers bickering over how they will stop this force.
Meanwhile the DPA do their utmost to protect survivors and the Guardians fight hard to keep the other supernatural's out of this deadly battle. The Nahash are doing whatever it takes to keep their pockets full of gold, all the while the vampires claw their way to the top of the food chain once more.
What will you do to survive?

A place to lay down your burdens Empty
PostSubject: A place to lay down your burdens   A place to lay down your burdens EmptyMon Apr 09, 2012 3:34 am

The small island owned by the Guardians was a beautiful retreat. It was so easy to lose yourself in the expertly manicured gardens that surrounded the stone castle, which doubled as living quarters and the main base of operations for the organisation. The smells of the sea air and early blossoming spring flowers were an intoxicating mix. It was one of Jacob’s favourite places to be when not out on a mission.

Doctor Jacob Garrison, the leader of the UK Guardians, took in a deep breath of the cold, salty sea air as he walked slowly through the gardens looking at the new flowers erupting out of the soil around. The cycle of life never ceased to amaze Jacob, how something could die during winter but come back to life when the new sun of spring blew away the cold, biting air. Life as a Guardian was never easy, but it was days like this when the sun was high in a cloudless sky and a cool breeze washed over him he felt like he was the luckiest man alive.

Turning back to look at the looming castle at the edge of the island Jacob’s mind went to the countless creatures housed in there. Creatures from every supernatural race had sought sanctuary on this island and for a long time they had ample space to accommodate them for a creature seeking assistance is never turned away by the Guardians. With the outbreak of open war between the Chthons and the DPA more and more were seeking refuge, and the Guardian Network was feeling the strain. The issue was not going to disappear by ignoring it, something that the other leaders across the Globe constantly reminded Jacob of, but he knew that taking five minutes away from his desk would not see the end of the World.

Jacob continued on his walk through the gardens until he reached the cobbled street that connected the various outhouses and training areas across the island and he thought about heading back to his office to tackle the mountain of paper work that was surely amassing on it. He sighed as he ran his fingers through his dark brown hair. Sometimes he wished he hadn’t sought the leadership of this vast organisation, he wished that all the responsibility hadn’t been put onto his shoulders.

No! He thought to himself. Don’t do this, don’t doubt yourself or the others will sense your fear.

He shook his head lightly before resigning to a few more minutes outside as he took a seat on a bench that sat alongside the street. Jacob had never noticed it before, but he was so thankful for it now. A place to sit and watch the world go by without the stress of life. The view from the bench spanned across the island and the sea was visible in the distance. It was true that the countryside on the British Isles were the unmatched and this island was no different.

A few more minutes, then I’ll head back.

A place to lay down your burdens Empty

Suddenly the radio crackled and Grace inwardly sighed. She’d been awake since half five this morning for it was her turn to the morning feedings and all she wanted to do now was to put her feet up for five minutes.

She pulled the radio from her belt and she spoke into it, “Grace here.”

“I’m sorry to do this but...” came the disembodied voice for her fellow keeper, “I’ve been called to the secured area and the pygmy dragons need their walk.”

The young woman came to a halt along what she thought of as the high street, a long portion of road with large stone buildings on either side, a swift debate in her mind occurred in a matter of seconds: to fashion a lie which would probably get found out anyway or just do it. The latter won. She could her mother’s voice sometimes you just have to get it done, no matter how bad you feel.

“Sure, I’m by the dragons anyway.”

With that she turned on her heel and walked back toward the small building which housed their three miniature dragons. With a swipe of her security card she was admitted into the entrance area which served as a dumping ground for wellies, buckets of food and other random things and grabbed three long leather leads from their hooks.

Through the next door were her favourite animals of the entire island complex. Upon seeing her, the three immediately went to her. George, who had been gifted to her mother over eight years ago, was an Indonesian breed which meant his scales changed colour with emotion and in a matter of seconds they changed from a content brown to an excited yellow. The other two, Anne and Charles, were miniature Welsh Greens and so they were always a bright, dazzling emerald.

Grace deftly hook each lead onto their collars and lead them out. They were no higher than her waist but had all the glorious of their legendary breed. Their thick tails were twice the length of their bodies and four powerful legs carried them swiftly. Once they were out into the chilly air, much like dogs, their long snouts rose up to sniff out something interesting.

They soon found themselves in the manicured gardens which surrounded the main housing block. Upon seeing Jacob, she guided them along the path which was lined with spring daffodils toward her boss.

“Morning.” She smiled brightly and took a seat next them. The dragons’ leads were long enough that they could still wander while they sat on the bench. Grace sat in companionable silence, letting him make conversation.

The view from the bench was breathtaking. Jacob could never get over the scenery of his new life, years of living in high rise apartment blocks and small offices had given him a limited chance to see scenery on a regular basis, but every time he got back out into the ‘wild’ country he felt like he was back home. He took in the scenery for a few moments longer before Grace sat down beside him. He offered her a polite smile as he saw the lead in her hand he followed it down until his eyes set on the pygmy dragons tethered at the end.

Dragons were such interesting creatures. Such a rich history had almost been lost for hundreds of years due to their imprisonment by the various Vampire factions around the Globe. There had never been a clear indication of why fire-phobic creatures would keep fire-breathing creatures around, but Jacob knew that the major factor of their imprisonment was for the Vampires to show that they had the power to enslave such a powerful race of creature. It had not gone unnoticed by the DPA.

For the years that Jacob worked at eh DPA’s field office he had many run-ins with the Chthons, even turned into one after an attack on one of their strongholds. Turning into a Vampire and then being returned to human form had been a horrific experience, and would not have been possible without his old friend Dr Anna Roberts, the mother of the girl he was now sitting to. His mind instantly went to Anna, still working for the DPA but assisting the Guardians when possible. She led a double life that he did not envy, but was thoroughly thankful for her support. The least he could do for her was ensure that her only daughter remained safe from the prying eyes of those that would want to seek her out to gain access to the knowledge held in her DNA.

After a few moments he realised that Grace had sat down and neither had spoken, “Good Morning,” he said with a smile. “How are the dragons doing?” Even as Leader of the Guardians he liked to stay up to date on the progress on all the creatures under their care. He was, ultimately, responsible for them. He stood and headed over to George, a dragon he had known since he had been rescued by Anna, “He’s getting big.”
