The Department of Preternatural Activities Officially, this department didn’t exist during the twentieth century. In fact they were very much active, quietly and efficiently they protected citizens from a threat most didn’t think existed. Their main goal has always been to avoid to mass panic, to keep the population happily ignorant of the creatures which are our neighbours.
Although many forms of this organisation have existed throughout the ages, from knights ordered by the monarch to slay demons to hired assassins, the DPA has functioned in its current form since between the World Wars. Created with the other Military Intelligence sections, it functioned in complete secrecy under section 13 where it became under the government’s official jurisdiction for the first time.
Today it is a worldwide organisation with links to other such agencies globally and the central unit at the UN. In the UK there are two main headquarters, the administrative hub in London and the field office in the depths of the Brecon Beacons. While the London branch deals with ambassadors and delegates and overlooks the financial budget, the field office is where soldiers train, top secret research is conducted and deadly creatures are kept. Located in a disused military base, it is heavily armed and expansive. To the outside observer it is quiet and defunct this is because the activity lies underneath this façade in a complex base under the rolling hills.
When the war began, they no longer could function in secret. They are easily differentiated from standard military with with plain black uniforms and are the first on scene to repel vampire attacks. They are there to serve the people at any cost and thus they now incur a huge financial burden for governments everywhere but especially the UK. Their treatment of supernatural creatures has now come under fire for their “shoot first, question later” tactics have led to organisations like the Guardians to speak out publicly and try to help the innocent.
They are the elite, highly trained soldiers, specialised doctors and incredible computer geniuses but this is no longer enough. They have become single minded in their goal to destroy humanity’s greatest threat: the vampires. They’re aggressive and at times brutal and there is no doubt they’re dedicated in succeeding.
